Hints and Tips around the docks
According to Chapman Piloting Seamanship & Small Boat Handling, when leaving a dock while another vessel is passing in the channel, you do not have the right-of-way, even if you are in the other vessel's "danger zone".
______________________________________________________________ You have stand-on status in a crossing situation established only when you are "fully in sight". It's a good idea to sound one prolonged blast whenever you leave a dock. In other words, boats entering the Marina have the right-of-way over boats leaving the Marina. The reason is the likelihood of a problem with a vessel is far greater for one returning than one leaving.
______________________________________________________________ Boating courtesy in marina, remember boats operating in or near the marina must be operated at low speeds. No wake while in or near the marina. You are responsible for your wake!
______________________________________________________________ Your boat should not interfere with the main walkway when it is docked. You may have to add a Spring Line from cleat on the middle of your boat to help keep your boat in place. |
